Seller's Note
Chenard & Walcker is a French automotive brand founded by Ernest Chenard and Henry Walcker in 1899. The fourth-largest French manufacturer by volume around 1922, under the direction of engineer Lucien Chenard, it was the first winner of the inaugural Le Mans 24 Hours race in 1923, and went on to collect a string of victories in motor racing. Its commercial success is ensured by its luxurious sports and touring cars. In addition to its car range, trucks were produced from 1931 onwards. The company became a subsidiary of Société des usines Chausson in 1936, and automobile production ceased in 1940. After the Second World War, the company produced trucks and commercial vehicles marketed under the Peugeot brand until 1965. Legally, the company was not dissolved and continued until 1992 through Chausson, which builds Citroën, Peugeot and Renault vans. Chenard & Walcker (1938) with special bodywork based on a Tank Y8 chassis This unique car is the work of a coachbuilder from the south of France, responding to a special order from Monsieur COURT-PICON, then living at 9, boulevard National in Marseille, as attested by the first registration document issued for this vehicle in 1938. Mr. COURT-PICON was then sub-prefect of Bône in French Algeria, and son-in-law of Mr. Gaëtan PICON, inventor of the famous "Amer PICON" drink. The body shop, as was customary at CHENARD & WALCKER from 1935 onwards, was based on a Tank Y8 chassis equipped with an 11 hp CITROËN Traction-Avant engine. However, it seems that the war compromised the completion of the vehicle, which remained an unfinished prototype. Discovered abandoned some 25 years ago, this atypical car was rescued in 1997 and restored by an enthusiast until 2002, just as it was when the construction site came to a halt in the early hours of the war. Unique with a history that has admirably withstood the test of time, this exceptional automobile has an appraisal file drawn up in 2017.V
